Three of the world's top gold producers
consider that difficulties in getting property
rights in Venezuela, as well as recent measures –the
government is subjecting all gold mining
concessions and contracts to review- will
further cause companies to stay away from
this country. The Mining Minister, Victor
Alvarez, far from reassuring mining investors,
said those concessions that cannot justify
inactivity will expire or be rescinded after
the review.

de hierro en El Mutún. La explotación

Three steelmaker companies will have to
pay 7% in fines (of 1999 gross sales) for
colluding to set prices. The complaint against
them came from construction industry associations
in Sao Paulo, which said the steelmakers
set up a system of fake discounts to divide
the market among them and prevent competition.

On September 12th, Skype’s founder
Niklas Zennstrom announced that it had agreed
to Skype’s acquisition by eBay – meaning
that in the near future online bargains could
use direct call systems. Unlike other potential
suitors, eBay plans to leave Skype alone

The effects of hurricane Katrina are still
hard to predict, but oil refineries in the
Gulf of Mexico have already shown a decrease
in production: Over 90% of oil production
in the region is still shut down; twelve
refineries have been forced to cut production
owing to supply shortages and ten of them
are out of action, according to a report
made on Thursday by the U.S. Department of
Energy.

a gold project in San Carlos, Costa Rica,
made by Industrias Infinito, a subsidiary
of Canadian Vannessa Ventures, has been approved
by Costa Rican authorities. Before obtaining
approval, an arbitration process was settled
through the Washington DC based dispute center
of ICSID. The company expects no more setbacks
and plans to begin gold mining in a year’s
time.
